Queensland Appliance Rebate under Government Scheme

In line with the global carbon emission reduction targets, the Australian government is aiming for 43% emissions reduction by 2030 and net-zero emission by 2050.Here in Queensland, the state government has set an electricity emission reduction target of 90% lower (than 2005 level) by 2035-36.

Queensland Appliance Rebate under BEST Scheme

Queensland’s government has enacted the Queensland Business Energy Saving and Transformation (QBEST) Rebates scheme and Climate Smart Energy Savers Rebate program to achieve these targets.

Under these programs, eligible Queenslanders can apply for rebated low-efficiency to high-efficiency appliance upgrades.

REBATE FOR QLD HOUSEHOLDS

Climate Smart Energy Savers Rebate For Households

The Climate Smart Energy Savers Rebate is further divided into two sub-categories:

Standard rebate:

Applicable to all eligible Queenslanders.

Low-income rebate:

For Queensland households with lower annual income.

A homeowner can either apply for the standard rebate or the low-income rebate. The rebate amount can’t be more than the total cost of appliance and installation.
Households earning $66,667 or less taxable income in 2022-23 financial year qualify for the low-income appliance rebate.

To be eligible for the low-income rebate you must meet provide a Notice of Assessment from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) for the 2022–23 financial year showing that you have a taxable income of $66,667 or less — if you live with a partner or spouse, the taxable income of the person with the highest taxable income will be assessed. — Queensland Government.

Key conditions for appliance rebate

  • The energy-efficient appliance must be purchased on or after 4 September 2023 and before the Climate Smart Energy Savers Rebate program closure date, i.e., the day when program funding gets exhausted.
  • To be eligible for a plug-in appliance (like fridges, dishwasher, and washing machines) rebate, a homeowner must take possession of the appliance after installation is over.
  • The rebate application must be submitted within 30 days (starting from the date of purchase) to qualify for the rebates.
  • Rebate applications for hard-wired/fixed appliances (for example, air conditioners and heat pump hot water heaters) must be submitted within 30 days after the installation by an accredited installer.

REBATE FOR QLD BUSINESS

QBEST Program For Small & Medium-Sized Businesses

For example, to receive a minimum rebate of AU $4,000, a Queenslander business must spend at least AU $8,000 (excluding GST) on appliance installation and product.

This AU $16 million cashback scheme was announced by the state government in August 2023. The scheme is a part of $35 million QBEST program. The QBEST, in turn, is a part of a $62 billion Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan.

The $35 million Queensland Business Energy Saving and Transformation (QBEST) program, part of the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan, will support businesses to purchase energy-efficient appliances and equipment, smart technology and energy management systems to reduce their energy costs. The program is being delivered in stages over the next 3 years — DEPW, Queensland Government.

Eligible Appliances

The appliances eligible for QBEST rebate are:

  •  A consumer appliance (aircon, clothes dryers, clothes washers, dishwashers, heat pump hot water systems, TV pool pump etc.) of 4-star energy rating or higher.
  • Energy-efficient commercial refrigerator, freezer, display fridges, and refrigerated vending machines.
  • Fan motors
  • LED lighting
  • Variable-speed air compressors
  • Variable-speed chillers
  • Variable-speed drive units

Eligible Businesses

A small and medium-sized Queensland business interested in applying for QBEST appliance rebate must:

  • Hold an active ABN (Australian Business Number). Businesses with multiple locations under a single ABN and businesses with multiple locations with different ABNs are eligible to apply for the QBEST rebates.
  • Be registered with Australian Taxation Office (ATO) for GST.
  • Not be a public company.
  • Employ at least 2 and maximum 199 full-time employees.
  • Not have received rebates/government funding for the appliance in the past.

Ineligible Businesses

A business is not eligible for the rebate, it has purchased appliances/equipment to start a business. To be eligible, your business must already be operating.
