Light Bulbs Upgrade in Victoria
To offset the upfront costs (the only trade-off associated with LED light bulbs) of replacing incandescent and halogen bulbs with LEDs, the Victorian government is offering rebates on lighting upgrades. Victorian residents can get the conventional light bulbs upgraded if they meet certain conditions mandated under the VEU program.
Why Install LED Light Bulbs under VEU Program?
Rebates are offered by the state government on lighting upgrades to help Victorians save money (on power bills) and environment. The rebates may be one reason to junk old lights, but LED light bulbs outshine the traditional lamps in all aspects. Let’s compare them to know how LED bulbs fare against the old lights.
Incandescent and halogen bulbs: Traditional filament bulbs that dissipate (waste) most of the electricity as heat, and they don’t last long.
Compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs): These are the spiral tube (filled with argon and mercury vapour) bulbs that are an energy-saving alternative to incandescent bulbs. But CFLs are less energy-efficient than their LED equivalent and take a long time (between 30 seconds to 3 minutes) to reach full illumination. There are many health and environmental risks associated with fluorescent lamps as they contain mercury vapour.
LED lamps: LEDs are the most energy-efficient and long-lasting. LED bulbs use way less energy than incandescent/halogen/CFL bulbs because diode light is much more energy efficient (as semiconductor diodes are great at converting watts to lumens) than filament (or electrode in case of CLF/fluros) light.
